The most immediate person affected by sexual violence is the victim/survivor, but the effects of sexual violence also go far beyond individual survivors, impacting their closest relationships as well as impacting communities and our society at large.
Concerted efforts by dedicated members from the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Uitenhage in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority, proved to be effective today Monday, 3 September 2018, when an accused was sentenced effectively to 22 years each on two counts of rape.
Gert Williams, 52 year old, was sentenced to 22 years imprisonment by the Uitenhage Regional Court on Monday, 3 September 2018, for raping a 12 year old victim twice during 2016 in Kamesh.
The accused was arrested by detectives soon after the cases were opened and Williams remained in custody for the duration of the trial. Williams was found guilty in November 2017. Williams was sentenced effectively to 22 years imprisonment each on the two counts of rape. The sentencing will run concurrently.
The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll welcomed the sentencing and commended the team for their comprehensive work which led to the effective conviction and sentencing by the Uitenhage Regional Court.
