Centane Regional Magistrate’s Court sentenced 23 year old Sanezo Mbesi to undergo 16 years imprisonment after he was convicted of raping an 18 year old woman. The accused was sentenced on Thursday, 28 February 2019.
It is alleged that the victim was from a traditional ceremony on 7 December 2013, at about 05:00 at Mdushane Locality, Qombolo Village, Centane. The victim came across the accused whilst she was still on her way home. The accused did not say any word and he dragged her to the nearby bushes where he raped her.
A rape case was registered at Centane Police Station and the investigation was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). The accused was traced and arrested. Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu has welcomed the sentence and he hoped that it will serve as a deterrent to would be other rapists.
