Durban rocked by another shoot-out

The Durban city centre was brought to a standstill on Friday morning after an exchange of fire between police and suspected armed robbers on Dr Pixley KaSeme Street.

It is understood that gunmen had stormed the office of a short-term lender and opened fire on the owner, badly wounding him.

The gang then ran into trouble, engaging in a gun battle with police that responded to the scene.

Two were arrested and one remains at large.

An eyewitness, who would not be named, told News24 that she heard screaming and saw people running.

“We were in our shop when we heard the commotion and saw people shooting. It was like something out of a movie. But the police and security were here very quickly.”

RescueCare spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said medics treated and transported the worker from ABC Financial services to the Netcare St Augustines Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

KZN EMS transported the two apprehended suspects to hospital for further care.

Police spokesperson Captain Khephu Ndlovu has said that the suspects will be charged with attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.
