Drunk policeman flees scene: Verulam, KwaZulu Natal

On August 28, 2015 at approximately 22:52 reaction Officers and paramedics were dispatched to Old Inanda Road, at the Trenance Park first phase entrance, after receiving a call of a motor vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, reaction officers found that a Nissan Luvina had collided into a light pole. It was later established that intoxicated driver claimed to be a policeman stationed at the Stanger police station and the vehicle he was driving was an unmarked police vehicle. The driver, did not sustain any visible injuries however claimed to have been feeling severe chest pains and insisted on being taken to hospital.

As a precautionary measure, he was transported to hospital however while on route he asked that the ambulance be stopped so that he could get off as he was feeling better. After medics declined to stop the vehicle in an isolated area, the drunk officer began verbally abusing them. Paramedics then called for assistance from Reaction Officers via two way radio as they approached the hospital. At this stage the drunken police officer who continued to verbally abuse and insisted on being dropped off away from the hospital. The Policeman then verbally abused nurses at the hospital but fled on foot upon hearing on the paramedics radio that reaction officers were a minute away.

It became evident at that stage that the policeman faked a chest pain to evade arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol by authorities who were on scene.

The suspect, an Indian male, claimed to be a policeman however this could not be confirmed.
