‘Drug mule lived with God’

A South African mother of two who was arrested in Thailand last week for cocaine possession is a frequent international traveller who “lived off” savings.

Just two months ago, Gauteng resident Monica Meere travelled to Thailand and describes her stay as “very nice”. Previously she had travelled to Turkey.

Yesterday, her family and friends rallied around her, saying that “she has made mistakes in the past”, but they believed she was innocent.

Meere, 34, was arrested at Bangkok Airport on Thursday after 6.7kg of cocaine in chocolate boxes was allegedly found in her luggage.

Thai customs officials, who were tipped off, had invited journalists. They held a news conference shortly after she was arrested.

A friend, Alma Mcnally, said she did not believe Meere would turn to drug trafficking.

“I have been her friend for 15 years. Yes, she has made mistakes in the past. She would not involve herself in the smuggling of drugs because she knows that one could lose everything if you do such things. She also lived with God.
