In an era where modern societies rarely turn to music as a form of cultural resistance and survival, the Afrikaner community in South Africa remains one of the few groups still crafting and embracing freedom songs.

These powerful anthems, rooted in history and identity, continue to resonate among Afrikaners who see them as a means of preserving their heritage and expressing resilience. The songs are a temporary “medicine” a “bandage” to heal the pains of today due to  persecution and the hatred of the ruling government. They might be temporary relief now but these songs will survive for centuries.

Songs like “Ons Sal dit Oorleef” (“We Will Survive This”) by Steve Hofmeyr have become rallying cries, echoing themes of perseverance amid social and political challenges. The iconic “Generaal De La Rey”, performed by Bok van Blerk, rekindles historical pride, calling upon the legacy of a Boer War general as a symbol of strength. Meanwhile, “Sing Afrikaner Sing” urges unity and cultural continuity through music.

The Afrikaner’s pain is carried through modern day freedom songs, a true testimony of the challenges faced by them and their survival.

Today another song joins the ranks of freedom for the Afrikaner “Dim the lights“…

Please share this song to raise awareness of the plight Afrikaners and other minority groups that suffer in South Africa.

Dim the lights

Lyrics:

Dim the lights in the Oval Office,
A shadow falls across his face.
But from Cape Town to Pretoria,
We know who fights for us best. (fights for us best)

[Pre-Chorus]
They call us names, they rewrite our history,
But our bloodlines don’t fade away.
With faith and land and a vow unbroken,
We stand tall, although many of us fall.

[Chorus]
Oh, Donald Trump is the Afrikaner’s hope,
Through the fire, all should take note.
When the world spits lies again,
He’s the shield for the Boer.
Our future is our plight,
For the volk, for the fight!
Dim the lights, let the truth be told,
Trump stands where the brave still hold!

[Verse 2]
They stole our farms, they mocked our past,
It’s always Van Riebeeck’s fault…
But the trek runs deep in our veins.
From fire and death on our plains,
We always remember, a forever pain. (a forever pain)

[Bridge]
The judges sneer, the fake media screams,
But the veld still whispers our dreams.
When the West bows down to the tide,
One man stands by our side.

[Final Chorus]
Oh, Donald Trump is the Afrikaner’s hope,
Through the hate, through the smoke.
From the courts to the final stand,
He’s the last true Western man!
Our future is our plight,
For the volk, for the fight!
Dim the lights, let the world see,
Trump and the Boer will still be free! (the Boer will still be free)
