Department presents smoke screen - Sewage continues to be dumped into the Vaal River

AfriForum on 27 September 2021, directed a letter to Senzo Mchunu, Minister of Water and Sanitation, after it came to light that sewage is still being dumped on numerous places in the Vaal River.

AfriForum have received numerous complaints of the deterioration in the Emfuleni Local Municipality especially with regards to the pollution of the Vaal River.

As the former Minister of Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, previously stated Rand Water together with the Waste Water Transplant Works has taken control of the situation in the Vaal and of the refurbishment of the pump station to stop all sewage spillage into the Vaal River and other surrounding water resources.

“The Department of Water and Sanitation presents a smoke screen. The minister almost yearly announces that a company, organisation or government institution will address the problem. If all the money already spent is added up, the problem could have been solved a long time ago,” says Lambert De Klerk, AfriForum’s manager of Environmental Affairs.

AfriForum made several requests in its letter to the Department, among others to urgently meet with the Department to discuss the issue and provide action plans.

AfriForum also extended a hand to the Department to assist them and provide advice from the organization’s database of specialists.
