The matter in which Gordhan asked for a declaratory order whereby he couldn’t interfere as a minister in banks’ decisions about their customers. It follows the saga surrounding Zuma’s Gupta friends after the banks had closed their accounts.

In a surprising turn of events, Zuma sought as a party to the case to be admitted on the Guptas side, against his own minister. In contrast, the Guptas wanted Gordhan to appear alone in the court and not leave the case to the advocate.

The court then ruled that the advocate might perform on behalf Gordhan and Zuma’s application to be admitted as a party to the case, was rejected by the court.
