David Lewis of Corruption Watch (CW) showed in the 2017 report that there was a 25% increase in corruption in 2017.

Since 2012 when CW was founded, more than 20 000 complaints were received from the public about corruption.

In 2017 5 334 complaints were received, of which 46% occurred in Gauteng and 13% in Natal. Interestingly, 30% of the complaints were imposed against provincial government officials, 29% targeted at national government and 22% on local government officials.

Bribery covers 27% of total complaints in 2017 alone.

Eighty-eight percent of the complaints are thus directed against government officials and it can be assumed that most of the officials are members of the ANC.
