A Gang of violent criminals with suspected links to the murder of an East London shop owner and a string of other crimes was arrested on Tuesday night in Mdantsane.
The four heavily armed suspects were found with five unlicensed rifles, a shot gun and nearly 500 rounds of live ammunition hours after an elderly Gonubie businessman was shot dead at Meises Halt on Tuesday afternoon.
The arrests of the men followed days of police investigations and monitoring illegal activities taking place at a residential premises at Chicken Farm near Mdantsane.
A police source who asked not to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media told the Daily Dispatch the gang was suspected of links to the armed robbery and murder of Meises Halt store owner Eldred Schultz.
The 74-year-old was shot dead at his store after four gunmen stormed the premises. He sustained a severe injury to his head and reportedly died instantly.
The four suspects, aged between 20 and 29 years old, were arrested around 11.30pm that night.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Nkosikho Mzuku said that in addition to the weapons, a laptop bag, cellphones, knives, watches and binoculars were also found on the scene.
He said the men are believed to be linked to a number of serious and violent crimes in and around Mdantsane.
“The police operation yielded positive results when four suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition at Chicken Farm,” said Mzuku. [….]
