A police captain who spent the night behind bars for allegedly freeing a suspect from custody was expected to make her first appearance in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The captain, who is based at the Table View police station, was arrested following allegations that she stopped her colleagues from arresting a suspect who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Scottsdene on Saturday.

Captain FC van Wyk said the captain allegedly demanded that the officers release the suspect. When they refused, she pulled the suspect free from them and instructed him to run away.

It was unclear whether there was any relation between the two.

The captain was arrested on Wednesday and had been charged with defeating the ends of justice.
