City of Johannesburg leaving evictees in the cold

Johannesburg – The City of Johannesburg has come under fire this week for not providing alternative accommodation for evictees of six inner city buildings.

On Tuesday, more than 1 000 people issued an application to the South Gauteng High Court requesting the court to declare that the City had failed in its constitutional obligations: to provide temporary accommodation to poor people facing eviction.

Nomzamo Zondo, an attorney at Seri-SA told the Mail & Guardian, said most of the evictees are already staying in bad conditions.

Zondo quoted the City as saying it had nine buildings but couldn’t accommodate the evictees because it is too expensive to renovate them for temporary accommodation.

The situation in Johannesburg comes just over a week after the City of Cape Town hit the headlines when hundreds of people were forcibly removed from land in Lwandle near Strand…
