The poultry industry is currently threatened after there were reports of bird flu on two chicken farms.

The poultry industry has already experienced severe setbacks after the government did not exercise proper control of imported chicken meat, with the consequence that chicken meat, which has also been injected with saltwater, has been dumped from abroad in South Africa. As a result, several large chicken farms had to be downsized, and several thousand workers lost their jobs.

With the outbreak of the highly contagious bird flu, the industry will once again suffer significant damage. On a farm alone 25 000 laying hens must be moved, and that meat is not suitable for any use.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry has introduced a ban on the sale of live chickens, which will last for two weeks. Any mortalities must be reported to the nearest state veterinarian.
