A motorist was found with his throat slit in a partially burnt car near Makhado, sparking protests in the area.
Punda Maria road between Louis Trichardt and the Kruger National Park was reopened for traffic on Tuesday morning after villagers staged a protest against the brutal murder.
Residents of Mutsha village in Makhado municipal area took to the streets on Monday evening demanding the arrest of suspects linked to the murder of the Volkswagen Polo driver.
The road was barricaded with burnt tyres, tree branches and rubble. The man was found dead in his car on Monday afternoon.
He was found naked, with blood running from his neck. His clothes were scattered near the scene, and his car was partially burnt.
Makhado police confirmed that the man was murdered with a sharp instrument, but said it was not clear what the motive was.
The man, who is believed to be a local man who worked in Gauteng, was apparently on his way home to see his parents in Limpopo when the incident occurred, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Solly Mukhola said.
He was attacked by an unknown suspect before reaching his destination.
“He was sliced on his neck with [a] sharp instrument, his throat was slit [and he was] left lying in his car,” Mukhola said.
“We don’t know the motive of the killing, because his cellphone and car were not stolen… We don’t know whether he was killed somewhere [else] and dumped here.”
On Tuesday morning, Mukhola said the road had been cleared and traffic was flowing again.
Police would continue to monitor the area.
