A former pilot of SAA, John Harty, who was the victim of racism on social media, walked out of court victoriously.
The court awarded him R450 000 damages.
This follows the seemingly false accusations of the transport union, Satawu, who claimed that he and other white pilots would conspire to let a plane crash when navigated by a black pilot.
The union Fedusa welcomed the court ruling and accused SAA of acting improperly by remaining silent on the issue and not providing support to Harty. Fedusa has expressed hope that the decision by the court, will make people think twice before they spread remarks or statements on social media.
In all probability, Harty was a target of retaliation since his appointment as chairman of the Pilots of SAA last year. The chairperson of SAA, Dudu Myeni, at that time, had made certain statements about SAA pilots.
