The two new power plants, Medupi and Kusile, were so poorly constructed that both now require urgent repairs. Certain design flaws and set up of some components are believed to be of the major concerns that are causing the two power plants to malfunction.

According to Eskom’s spokesperson, Titus Mathe, it will cost about R8 billion to rectify the mess.

The two power plants that have just been commissioned recently took more than a year longer to set up than was initially planned, but observers say it was clear from the start that there was not enough expertise.

It is not clear whether the repairs will lead to the introduction of load shedding, and where Eskom will get the money from, this remains an unanswered question.

The power provider has already given notice that it now wants to have a 15% tariff increase for each of the next three years.
