Bail and parole again under the spotlight

Die Vryburge

The issue of bail and parole given to criminals that are associated with serious crimes such as murders, and rape, has once again come under the spotlight after it emerged that a suspected rapist who committed the heinous act was released early on parole.

John Papa Mokati (20), who is linked to the gruesome rape of Miss. Alice Maree (21) in Theunissen, had several previous convictions. Initially, he tried to get bail, but eventually abandoned that application and will remain in detention until 3 April for his next court appearance. Miss. Maree was admitted to the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein and died two weeks after the incident.

Mokati has served a sentence in Winburg’s prison for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and he was wanted for escaping from custody and for using a vehicle without the consent of the owner.

More and more cases occur where bail is granted to hard and previously convicted offenders.
