Attacker caught after family threatened

Donald Bremer (76) from Gardiner Street in Parow, woke up with a weight on top of him, his arms were held to his sides and then he was pulled from his bed. Bremer, an ex-policeman from Claremont, knows how to defend himself.

“I was taken by surprise, but I managed to pin him down in the corner and then the police arrived,” he says.

But his daughter-in-law, Beverley Shepherd, who stays in the house, says since the attack, Donald has been forgetful.

He was, in fact, struck hard in his face and the perpetrator threatened to kill him.

Shepherd woke up when Bremer looked into her room, covered in blood, a stranger standing by his side. The stranger had a microwave oven in his arms.

“The man ordered us to open the front door for him. He held some kind of weapon under his shirt with which he treatened us,” she says.

Beverley opened the door and in his haste, the burglar dropped the microwave oven.

“He told me to bring it to him, and I told him he can do it himself,” she recalls. The man then pulled the microwave through the door by its cord….
