The criminals focus are directed towards theft of the targets bank card by means of confusion and distraction as well as obtaining the pin number through sneaky tactics.

The criminal poses as a concerned member of the public who has recently experienced problems with a ATM machine whilst attempting to do a cash withdrawal.

The criminal then interacts with the next individual in line who intends to make a withdrawal from the ATM machine (likely to be the criminals pre-selected target) by informing them of the problems he experienced sooner and advising them of the correct method to insert the card into the ATM and entering the pin number.

By means of confusion and distraction the criminal swipes the card without the victim taking notice and hangs around until the pin number has been obtained through peeking around and over the shoulder of the victim.

In the attached clip, these methods of swiping the card and obtaining the pin is being displayed, but the actual fraudulent withdrawal of funds from the victims account are done within minutes after the theft from a ATM at a different location from where the victim was robbed.

The ATM where the withdrawal is done close enough to complete the withdrawal before the matter is reported and the card de-activated.

In this case the victim was robbed of R5000.00 within a matter of 3 minutes since the card and pin has been swiped.
