Assault rifles recovered by police after shootout

Police have launched a manhunt for four men who slipped away after a high-speed pursuit and shoot-out near Tongaat on Sunday.

Officers had thrown out a dragnet for the suspected business robbers after a spate of armed attacks in KwaDukuza and Gingindlovu.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said members of crime intelligence, Tongaat SAPS, Umhlali K9 unit and the Hawks had embarked on an intelligence operation.

“The members spotted the vehicle with four occupants and chased the vehicle as the suspects fled.

“The suspects opened fire at police before abandoning their vehicle at Magwaveni in Tongaat and fleeing on foot. Two AK47 firearms and a LM4 rifle were recovered in their getaway vehicle, which was also seized by police. A manhunt is still under way for the suspects,” Naicker said.
