Armed suspect shot in self defence by reaction officer

One of Marshall Security reaction officers luckily escaped serious injury on August 5,2015 whilst responding to an alarm activation in Umgeni Park, Durban North.

The armed suspect who lunged at him with a knife was shot in self defence. The reaction officer’s bulletproof vest luckily protected him from serious injury. He was examined by Netcare and treated for cuts and abrasions.

The suspect was declared dead at the scene.

The reaction officer had arrived at the house in Hillbrow Road, Umgeni Park – at approximately 14:20 – after receiving the alert from the Marshall Security control room. The premises had been broken into on previous occasions.

When the officer spotted a suspect on the property he called for backup. He entered the premises via the garage and came upon three suspects who were cornered in an alleyway alongside the house.

This was when one of the men lunged at the officer with a knife, stabbing at his chest multiple times. In self defence the officer drew his firearm and shot three rounds at the suspects.

Two of the men fled the scene – one in an unknown direction and the other over a back wall into a bushy area – leaving a blood trail in his wake. The third one was deceased.

Greenwood Park SAPS and the dog unit arrived and the bush area was searched but had no joy in finding the other two suspects, who are still at large.

The men had gained access to the property by removing a window pane. A number of items – including a plasma TV and an X-Box – were found outside the premises where the incident took place.

It is believed that the suspects are responsible for numerous housebreakings and house robberies in the Wedgewood and Umgeni Park area.

Well done to all involved.
