Kempton Park, South Africa – A brave Kempton Park man shot and killed an armed robber earlier this morning on Maxwell Street after he and an accomplice attempted to rob him and his friends.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesman, the man and four friends were coming back from an event at about 5am when a silver Audi 4 approached them. An armed man got out and demanded their cell phones.
“The men gave up their cell phones. One of the victims fought with the armed suspect, took off his gun and shot him in the upper body. His accomplice abandoned the vehicle and ran. The victim, who still had the gun, attempted to shoot the other suspect but he managed to get away,” said Mtshali.
The vehicle the men were travelling in was traced back to a hijacking in Norkem Park earlier this week. It has a false registration number and police are still looking into whether it could be linked to other crimes.
“The car was stolen in Norkem Park on Wednesday and we believe it may be linked to other crimes committed since then,” added Mtshali.
The vigilance and bravery of the man has been commended by Maj Gen Vincent Leshabane, Tembisa Cluster commander.
“This man’s bravery is commendable and we are glad he was able to defend himself in this situation. We would like to appeal to our communities to be wary of criminal activities in their own backyards. To mothers, if your son comes home with an expensive car such as the Audi in this case, report it to the police immediately to prevent situations like this from repeating themselves.
“Criminals should be mindful of the fact that members of the public will defend their safety and that of their belongings and loved ones and it may end in fatalities,” said Leshabane.
