Consumers are worried that electricity shortages could hit the country after threats of strikes at Eskom’s coalmines.
Unions are already preparing to pave the way for strikes, after accusing the Chamber of Mines of acting in bad faith regarding the structure of the salary negotiations that will begin in June.
Three unions have indicated this during talks with the Chamber of Mines this week.
The Chamber indicated that they do not want to negotiate directly with the unions, but would prefer to negotiate with its central negotiating forum. The power-hungry radical unions do not want to relent, as this does not benefit them in any way.
The unions are now threatening to take the dispute to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration in the hope to obtaining a strike certificate.
