Three people were shot dead and six wounded in Lindelani near Durban on Sunday night.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said details of the motive and the events leading up to the shooting were scant.
“At the Lindelani area at about 19:45, three people were fatally shot by unknown suspects and six were taken to hospital for medical attention,” he said.
“Three cases of murder and six of attempted murder were opened for investigation at Ntuzuma Police Station and no arrests have been made. The motive for the killing is unknown,” Zwane said.
A police source with knowledge of the incident, who could not be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, said detectives were investigating a link between the triple slaying and a shoot-out at a city centre taxi rank last week.
On Thursday, three people were killed and six injured in an exchange of fire between a group of gunmen and heavily armed security personnel at the Brook Street taxi rank.
It is suspected the shootings were related to a dispute between Port Shepstone’s Zamokuhle Long Distance Taxi Association and rival operator, the Sonke Long Distance Taxi Association.
Sonke is reported to have close links to President Jacob Zuma’s taxi boss nephew, Mfundo Gcaba.
Zamokuhle recently took Sonke to court regarding its dispute over routes between Durban and the South Coast.
