ANC MP arrested for stock theft

Die Vryburger

Mapule Veronica Mafolo was arrested in the Schweizer-Reneke area after she and two men allegedly stole two calves they wanted to sell at an auction.

Mafolo is an ANC MP from the Western Transvaal and earns a reasonable salary of just over R1 million a year. Before that, she attended only 21 of the 35 scheduled meetings of the subcommittees, and thus actually gives her a salary of almost R49 000 per meeting.

FF Plus’s leader in North West, Michal Groenewald, said in his response that the ANC once again sets an example of crime, gross and poor leadership for the whole country. It is entirely disgraceful that a person who is a member of one of the highest authority structures in the country and a prominent member of the ruling party are potentially guilty of something as serious as stock theft.

Mafolo and her co-accused have already appeared in the magistrate’s court on Schweizer-Reneke where she was released with a warning while her co-accused were each released on bail of R800.

“By releasing her only with a warning is not a good start. The judiciary may under no circumstances distinguish and give preferential treatment to Mafolo simply because she is an MP. For this reason, action must be taken against her.”

“The judiciary and the ANC should set an example of Mafolo by acting in the strictest possible means against her. A clear message must be sent that criminality will not be tolerated,” said Mr. Groenewald.
