The Department of Education announced that 193 pupils in grades 3 to 5 have fallen pregnant during the past three years. The total number of pregnancies amounted to 42,253 for students between Grade 3 and Grade 12.
The question is firstly how old is the grade 3-5 pupils? In previous terms, it means children between standard 1 and standard 3. How can an 8-year-old get pregnant?
But there are children aged 14 and 15 who are in standard one or two. Some boys are 16 years and older that are still in primary school.
Once again the department withheld the race of the pregnant children and brought you to the reality of Africa where morals, norms, and values are different because in many cases, even teachers are responsible for school children’s pregnancies.
These statistics are part of the country’s problem where more than a third of the population receive allowances. In the Western Cape, households are maintained by women (girls) with three children on the children’s benefit they receive.
The state is indirectly responsible for these pregnancies because they “sponsor” the process.
