The Auditor General, Kimi Makwetu, found that unauthorized expenses increased by more than 38% to R2,1 billion. This brings the total expenses to R51 billion. Clean audits decreased by 23% and urgent steps have to be taken to prevent some provincial departments such as Health, Education and Public Works from collapsing.

The R 51 billion includes R28,4 billion which has been blown by state entities. Eskom’s R19,6 and Transnet’s R8 billion are the big culprits. Unauthorized expenses or excessive spending increased by 86%, while wasteful spending increased by 200%.
