Afrikaans schools drastically reduced

Die Vryburger

Afrikaans schools decreased from 1 814 to 1 234 during 2002 until 2016. This is a decline of almost a third.

The recognition comes from the minister of basic education, Angie Motshekga. Although, she does not have the figures before 2002.

She claims the reason for this is because of a “greater demand” of English pupils and a “decrease” in the number of Afrikaans students at schools.

It is proof that the assessment against Afrikaans is also at basic education level, said Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus parliamentary spokesperson on basic education.

Adv. Alberts said he found the minister’s answers surprising, and the FF Plus’s observation does mean there is a decrease in the number of Afrikaans students, but that rather a deliberate and systematic extermination of Afrikaans in schools.

“There is an aggressive attitude towards Afrikaans where schools are forced to take multilingual pupils, afterward the process of dual and later total Anglicisation quickly follow. A primary reason for this is because no new schools are being built and many existing schools are neglected and inoperative.”

“Gauteng MEC for education, Panyaza Lesufi’s hardline against Afrikaans schools, serve as evidence of this.”

“Based on the minister’s assumptions, I will certainly follow up with questions. It should come from objective, scientific studies. I will also confront her about the protection of Afrikaans schools and the creating schools for other mother tongues to protect Afrikaans,” said Adv. Alberts.
