During the first quarter of the financial year, all contact crime in South Africa increased with double figures when compared to the same period last year.
Murder has increased with 66,2% and from the beginning of April to the end of June, 5 760 people were murdered. That is 2 295 more than in the corresponding period last year.
On average for this ninety one day period 63.296 people were murdered every day in South Africa.
While 10 006 people were raped in the same period.
The minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, released the crime statistics on 20 August 2021.
