Five suspects who robbed a supermarket in Estcourt, were fatally wounded during a shootout with police near Mooi River on Sunday afternoon.

Hawks spokesman, Major Robert Netshiunda, said, “Members of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, Task Force and the Durban K9 Unit officers were rushing to a scene of a business robbery when they met the suspects along the R103 Main Road.

The officers signalled for the Toyota Quantum which the suspects were travelling in to stop.

Instead of obeying the order from police the suspects started shooting at the men of law, before abandoning their vehicle and trying to flee on foot, still shooting at the police.

When the police retaliated they shot and fatally wounded five suspects aged between 28 and 55 years. One policeman was injured and was rushed to hospital.”

Five firearms including one AK47, one R5 rifle and three 9mm pistols, 60 live ammunition for various firearms, boxes of cigarettes and airtime which were allegedly stolen during the robbery were found stashed inside the vehicle.

Another vehicle which was allegedly used by another two men during the robbery was found abandoned just outside Estcourt. The search is on for the two suspects who are believed to have made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
