A policeman was shot dead during an armed robbery in Limpopo on Monday night, the fourth cop to be killed in the province since the beginning of the year.

“We will not rest until the suspects in the heinous killing are brought to justice,” said Limpopo Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola.

“We will use all the resources available to us to track down these suspects to bring them to book and if any member of the public out there has any information that can assist us we are appealing to them to come forward.”

Warrant Officer Thomas Mabada, 52, was killed on Monday evening while chasing suspected armed robbers on the road between Siloam and Thohoyandou. Mabanda was attached to visible policing at the Siloam Police Station.

Masemola said Mabada had made the greatest sacrifice, “by giving his life in trying to protect the safety of others”.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto had previously told News24 that Mabada and his partner were patrolling in a recent business hotspot for robberies when they received information about a suspicious vehicle.

“After spotting the vehicle, the officers pursued it. It then turned off onto a gravel road and the occupants opened fire on the police. The warrant officer was… shot and died on the scene.

“The suspected vehicle was later found abandoned,” Otto told News24.

No arrests have been made.
