From the 25th till the 31st of August the Great African Caravan is hosting various artistic events centered on the theme of female artistic action against violence in Delft, Khayelitsha and Cape Town.
The Great African Caravan (GAC) is a major travel project conceptualised by the Art Caravan Association bringing together twelve artists from India, Kosovo, Germany, England, Uganda and the Netherlands. From August 2018 till February 2019, these artists will travel across the African continent to facilitate dialogues between communities and work on democracy, human rights and peace through art and cultural exchange under the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The seven-month long journey starts in Cape Town, South Africa after which the GAC will traverse Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Egypt. In collaboration with local NGOs and artists, the GAC will address locally pertinent issues in the framework of the SDGs. Together, the Caravan and partners will host performances, workshops and dialogues aimed at fostering intercultural exchange and empowerment through the agency- and peace building capacities of poetry, theatre, painting, filmmaking and music.
From the 25th till the 31st of August the GAC will kick off its project in collaboration with the following organisations:
Africa Unite, a human rights and youth empowerment NPO based in Cape Town that works with youth from different backgrounds to prevent conflicts, promote social cohesion and enhance socio-economic development;
Rainbow Art Organisation, an NPO in Delft South providing disadvantaged youths with educational programmes focused on arts and culture;
Theatre4Change and Makukhanye Art Room, an NPO and shack theatre based in Khayelitsha that works with a diverse range of community participants and artists to create an artistic platform and educational opportunities for young people experiencing difficulties accessing the cultural infrastructure of Cape Town’s city centre;
Baz-Art, an NPO in Cape Town dedicated to inclusive and educational art projects and especially street art.
Within the time span of a week, artistic collaborations will take place, which will involve multiple local organisations, various artists, two communities and an exploration and celebration of cultural diversity as different cultural and racial backgrounds are coming together to focus on the theme of female artistic action against violence and crime, drawing on the following SDGs: Goal 4, Quality Education, Goal 5, Gender Equality, and Goal 10, Reducing Inequality. In addition to working towards gender equality and action against violence, we aim to offer international exposure for local artists and their initiatives. At the end of the week, the artistic engagements will be showcased. Additionally, the journey of the Great African Caravan will be launched and flagged off.
