Just after sunrise on Wednesday, 8 February three South Africans born under a very lucky star became the official winners of the Zapper ‘50K When You Pay Competition.’

Announced live during the Expresso Morning Show on SABC 3, Mieke Smit from Somerset West in the Western Cape, Sorah Garber from Umhlanga in Durban and Duncan Deane of Nottingham Road in the Midlands were the lucky trio selected to receive R50 000 worth of vouchers each, courtesy of Zapper.

Mieke Smit was half asleep while eating breakfast in her pyjamas when she heard her name loud on Expresso. “I couldn’t believe my ears. It was my name coming from the TV! At first I thought that I was dreaming. Then I was convinced I was dreaming after I heard that I’d won R50 000 in prizes,” said the 23-year-old student.  “Only after a Zapper representative called to congratulate me on my win did I believed it was real.”

A surprised Sorah Garber, who entered the competition on a whim just two weeks before the entry cut-off date, beamed as she spoke of how the win would be changing her life. “It’s going to make such a huge difference. I’ll be using my prize to pay for all my regular purchases, and use the money saved to do something special for my family,” said the young mum and engineer.
She further expressed her gratitude to Zapper by saying, “I never carry a bag so the cash and cardless way to pay with Zapper has already been such a reward. Winning is simply the cherry on top of all the other great benefits I receive from being a Zapper user.”

“I thought someone was pulling my leg!” laughed 60-year old Duncan Deane. “The last time I won anything I was in Grade 4 – a steam train cake that by the time they gave it to me had already gone sour. To have an open wallet of R50 000 is the best early birthday present a man could ask for. You can’t beat that!”

Each winner will have R1000 vouchers for the next 50 weeks delivered direct to their Zapper inbox, which they can use to dine at restaurants, shop online and pay for bills. They can even pay it forward by donating a voucher to a worthy charitable cause.

The competition which kicked off from August last year until midnight on 31 January 2017 was open to everyone who downloaded and successfully transacted with Zapper during the competition run. By simply scanning and paying for their purchases with the app at a Zapper supported merchant, they were automatically entered into the draw. With every successful transaction after that, users received additional entries.

Jessica Fowlds, Marketing and Communications Manager for Zapper South Africa said: “Because technology is the future, we wanted to encourage people to start embracing smartphone purchases. They are fast, convenient and make such a huge difference to your life. However, there are some people who still have reservations about mobile payments. The competition allowed new users who downloaded the app to see that Zapper is one-hundred percent safe. Unlike cash that can be stolen and credit cards that run the risk of being cloned, Zapper is encrypted with security features in place for user safety.”
