Females flying solo: the rise of women charting their own course

While the idea of women travelling alone was once seen as unconventional and even unsafe, women are increasingly opting to travel by themselves instead of with their partners, families or even friends.

Recent travel statistics from The Travel Corporation revealed that solo travel has increased from 11% pre-pandemic to 15% in 2023, with 81% of these travellers being women.

“While Hollywood would have us all believing that women only ever choose to travel solo after a break-up or in search of romance, I believe women are simply realising that travelling without others is far less limiting and so much more enjoyable,” says Shanna Docherty, Regional Head of Trade Sales for Middle East and Africa (MEA) at Cathay Pacific. “Your time is yours, and you can choose the destination, itinerary and pace that suits you best.”

The reasons for this rise in female solo travel are numerous. Changing perceptions of women and the right to independence have empowered women to chart their own course and take leaps into previously unventured territories. What’s more, women are earning more and have greater buying power than ever before, giving them the freedom.

The growing reach of social media has also allowed women to research destinations that are safe and accommodating of their needs and find support networks of women from around the world who showcase their travels and inspire others to follow suite.

Ideal destinations for solo female travellers

While the most popular destinations that women choose to travel to when travelling alone include London, Mauritius and Dubai, Docherty says that there’s more to discover off the beaten track.

“Southeast Asia, and specifically destinations like Hong Kong, are ideal for women travelling on their own,” she says. “While it’s always advisable to have your wits about, Hong Kong is known as one of the safest destinations to visit, and it’s not uncommon to see women walking alone at night.”

With Hong Kong boasting a beautiful balance of bustling city life and opportunities to enjoy the serenity of nature, the city is a must-visit on every female solo traveller’s bucket list. Visitors can enjoy shopping at one of the many brand outlet stores, sail the Aqua Luna on a ‘junk boat’ (a traditional Chinese vessel), and indulge in local delicacies at one of the many prominent restaurants on offer or even try dining at a local wet market for the memorable experience.

“Japan is also one of the safest countries in the world, with Tokyo and Osaka being two of the best places for first-time visitors,” says Docherty. “For women who want to get away from it all and enjoy a relaxing, solitary trip to invigorate the mind and boost the spirits, look no further than this absolute exquisite gem.”

Among the many attractions female solo travellers would enjoy in Japan, the traditional Japanese spas with natural bubbling hot springs, known as onsen, are often top of the list. There are over 27,000 hot springs across the country’s onsen towns, but most are located in the more tranquil and remote Hokkaido region.

For the adventurous at heart, Indonesia’s Bali is a must. The Denpasar’s Pasar Madung Market for instance is an open-air shopping destination for all the shopping you need, from groceries, souvenirs, and a chance to mingle with locals. If you’re looking to spend the day pampering yourself, Bali boasts an impressive array of world-class spas. Treat yourself at Ayana Resort’s Spa, a stunning retreat perched high above the sea, where you can experience luxurious beauty treatments crafted to relax and rejuvenate you.

In the heart of modern Korean culture, Seoul offers a vibrant mix of fashion and bold culinary experiences, all set alongside the backdrop of beautifully preserved historical landmarks. For a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, you can cycle through the Han River parks, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and visit notable sites like the Yeouido Park and Seoul Forest.
