Smart design, zero-waste cocktails, and solar innovation power the hotel’s journey to global eco-recognition.

Johannesburg, South Africa – December 2025: The Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch and Marriott Executive Apartments Johannesburg Melrose Arch has been awarded the internationally recognised Green Key certification, a prestigious eco-label for environmental responsibility and sustainable operations within the tourism and hospitality industry.

The certification, issued by WESSA, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa, recognises the hotel’s outstanding achievement in environmental responsibility, from water and energy efficiency to waste management, food sourcing, and community impact.

Commitment to sustainable operations

The property’s Green Key audit highlighted a number of best practices that have become embedded in the hotel’s daily operations, including:

  • Comprehensive waste management, with detailed waste tracking, separation, and e-waste recycling systems;
  • 100% LED lighting and smart building management systems to optimise heating, cooling, and ventilation;
  • Smart water management, including efficient flow restrictors and an in-house bottling system that eliminates single-use plastic bottles;
  • Food waste reduction, achieved through initiatives like Bokashi composting, creative zero-waste beverage concepts, and local ingredient sourcing; and
  • Community engagement, including soap recycling projects with the Basisa Foundation and environmental education collaborations with Generation Earth.

“This achievement marks a defining moment for our hotel,” said Heinrich Gottsche, Hotel Manager of the Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch and Marriott Executive Apartments Melrose Arch. “From the start, we’ve focused on creating a workplace and guest experience that prioritises wellbeing and responsibility. Our team embraced sustainability wholeheartedly by introducing smart energy and water systems, reducing food waste, and partnering with suppliers who share our values. Achieving Green Key certification not only supports Marriott International’s global sustainability goals but also meets our guests’ growing expectations for responsible travel.”

“At WESSA, as we approach our 100-year milestone in 2026, it is inspiring to see how establishments like this one are redefining modern hospitality. Showing that comfort, quality, and care for the environment can go hand in hand,” says Cindy-Lee Cloete, CEO of WESSA.
