Birthday celebrations bring a new play gym to Townhill Hospital and surprise gifts for 23 shoppers

Liberty Midlands Mall has marked its 23rd birthday by turning the celebration outwards, giving back to the Pietermaritzburg community and recognising some of the shoppers who have been part of its journey. As part of the birthday celebrations, the mall donated a new play gym to the children’s ward at Townhill Hospital, creating a cheerful space where young patients can play and enjoy moments of normality during their hospital stay.

For children spending time in hospital, opportunities to play can provide a welcome distraction from treatment and unfamiliar surroundings. The new play area will give young patients a dedicated space to engage, interact and simply be children during their time at Townhill Hospital.

Lawrence Joubert, General Manager of Liberty Midlands Mall, says the birthday was an opportunity to celebrate the relationship the mall has built with the community over the past 23 years. “Liberty Midlands Mall has been at the heart of the Pietermaritzburg community for 23 years, and we see our role as being a good friend and neighbour to the people who have supported us throughout that time,” says Joubert. “A birthday is a celebration, but it is also an opportunity to say thank you. We wanted to mark ours in a way that brought some happiness to children at Townhill Hospital while also surprising some of the shoppers who make the mall what it is every day.”

23 years, 23 shoppers, 23 surprises

The celebrations continued inside the mall, where 23 unsuspecting shoppers were randomly surprised with 23 gifts and gift cards sponsored by Liberty Midlands Mall and the stores. Dial-a-Bed, Huawei, Cell C, Standard Bank, Dermalogica, The Body Shop, CineCentre, Levis, Edgars and Nando’s joined the birthday celebration by contributing gifts, allowing the mall to surprise shoppers as they went about their day.

The initiative was a simple way to thank customers for their continued support while adding an unexpected birthday moment to an ordinary shopping trip. For 23 years, Liberty Midlands Mall has been part of everyday life in Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands, from shopping trips and family outings to meals, movies and celebrations. As it enters its 24th year, the mall will continue to build on that relationship, remaining connected to the community it calls home.
