5 ways to celebrate Heritage Day

The 24 September 2021 is Heritage Day and the great news is that this year, it falls on a Friday, resulting in a lovely long weekend, without having to take any extra leave!

Not unlike many of us, Rioma Cominelli, Director at First Loyalty Plus, loves long weekends and spending quality time with her family, and this Heritage Day will be no different. “Being Italian by descent, our celebrations will always include a little bit of Italy. When Italians eat, every meal is a loud and joyous celebration of family, food and wine, with recipes and traditions passed down from generation to generation.”

For those who are suffering from a little cabin fever and are looking to do something different this Heritage Day, Rioma suggests the following:

Go away for the long weekend: The thrill of being able to get away for the long weekend, is priceless. But after the year we’ve all had, who can really afford to pay premium prices? There are so many discounted rates and special offers on accommodation and flights, if you just know where to look. For example, you can get instant access to more than 10 000 resorts and hotels in South Africa (and more than 500 000 around the world) with up to 50% off as a member of First Loyalty Plus.

Take a cultural or theme tour: Be a tourist in your own town! There are wonderful places to explore right on our doorsteps – just step outside to find the most wonderful hidden gems. If you’re in KZN, Phezulu Safari Park is a great place to experience traditional Zulu dancing. In Cape Town? Take a boat ride to Robben Island and learn more about the prison that held Nelson Mandela captive for 18 years. Jo’burg? Hop on a tourist bus and discover places you didn’t even know existed.

See your world from a different view: Have you always dreamt of flying up, up and away in a helicopter or hot air balloon? Maybe you’re an adrenalin junkie and you’re into the thrill of shark cage diving, skydiving or bungee jumping, but haven’t yet taken the plunge? If the cost has been prohibitive, then here’s great news – there are literally a million special offers waiting for you to take advantage of, at highly competitive rates, if you just know where to find them.

Go for coffee with family: Sometimes celebrations can be as simple as going out for coffee with family or friends, spending quality time face-to-face simply lingering with time on your hands. Bearing in mind that everyone’s budgets are stretched to capacity, you’ll need to get creative when it comes to maximising your moola, so look for great deals like 2 for the price of 1 coffee specials, or cash-back deals on meals.

Have a (small) braai: Central to any kind of celebration is the food, and Heritage Day is the perfect opportunity to showcase your cultural gems – be it bunny chow or breyani, koeksisters or pap and wors! While we may differ culturally, few will argue that nothing beats the smell of shisa nyama being cooked on an open fire (but we warned, you’ll face ridicule if you opt to take a shortcut and use the gas braai). Why not gather a small group of family or friends around the braai and organise a potjie competition? (Don’t forget to keep numbers less than 10, social distance and sanitize!)

Rioma’s parting advice? “Join First Loyalty Plus for only R125 per month to get access to amazing deals on accommodation, activities, online shopping, car hire, cruises, flights, meals, movies, spa treatments etc. Happy Heritage Day!”
