The political storm surrounding the prosecution of Bitcoin pioneer Roger Ver is intensifying. Investigative journalist Laura Loomer has denounced the case as “clearly lawfare,” joining a growing chorus of Trump supporters who say the charges must be dropped immediately.
“Looking deeper into the @rogerkver situation, it is clearly a case of lawfare. Even though he renounced his US citizenship, I believe he was being targeted by the Biden regime for being innovative. It’s crazy to think you can be sentenced to life in prison for alleged “tax evasion” Loomer posted on X. In a follow-up, she blasted the Biden administration’s “war against cryptocurrency and crypto holders,” questioning how Ver could face life in prison over tax disputes while violent criminals are routinely released with minimal consequences.
A Case Rooted in Lawfare
Ver’s legal team has already filed a motion to dismiss the indictment, arguing that the government’s case is built on unconstitutional provisions of the so-called “exit tax,” vague statutory foundations, and the selective use of his privileged communications with attorneys—an attack on due process itself.
Documents show that Ver—known globally as “Bitcoin Jesus” for his early evangelism of cryptocurrency—sought expert legal and accounting advice in good faith. His lawyers and accountants are unequivocal: he is 100% innocent of the criminal charges and made a good faith effort to pay his taxes correctly at a time when the IRS had issued no guidance on how to treat Bitcoin for tax purposes. Instead of offering him the same chance to settle that tens of thousands of other Bitcoin holders later received, prosecutors pursued an aggressive criminal case—and, even more shocking, added so-called “2017 charges” that his legal and accounting teams stress are entirely fabricated, collapsing the moment they are tested against Ver’s documented compliance. What should have been resolved as a routine civil matter was thus transformed into a weaponized indictment built on baseless allegations.
Trump Supporters Rally
Many in the public are now asking why the Department of Justice is still pursuing Ver. Major Trump supporters are calling to drop the false charges against American-born Bitcoin pioneer Roger Ver, framing the indictment as a prime example of Biden-era weaponized justice.
Ver’s case has also become a rallying point for Trump’s political base. Prominent supporters are pressing President Donald Trump and Pam Bondi to drop the charges, portraying the case as part of Biden’s larger “war on crypto.” Many view it as a chance for Trump to cement his legacy as a defender of innovation and freedom—just as he did with his historic pardon of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht.
Crypto and libertarian activists note that Ver seeded funding for foundational companies such as Blockchain.com, Kraken, XRP, and Bitcoin.com. His contributions, they argue, should be celebrated, not criminalized.
A Symbolic Battle Over Freedom
With an October hearing date set on his motion to dismiss, Ver’s fate hangs in the balance. The outcome will determine not just his freedom, but whether the U.S. continues down a path of weaponized prosecutions against innovators.
As Loomer bluntly put it: “We need to end weaponized justice in America.”
