
A group of dedicated students from Stellenbosch University has pioneered a groundbreaking project aimed at improving organ donation efficiency in South Africa. Their initiative, now formalized as the NGO Save Seven, has led to the establishment of a specialized intensive care unit at Tygerberg Hospital, designed to support consented organ donors and maximize the life-saving potential of each donation.
A Critical Need for Organ Donation
Each organ donor has the potential to save seven lives through major organ transplants—such as kidneys, heart, and lungs—while tissue donations can benefit an additional 52 people. However, the process of preparing for organ donation often occupies valuable bed space in hospitals, creating logistical challenges.
The newly launched Save7 LifePod at Tygerberg Hospital provides a dedicated space for transplant teams to manage donors while allowing grieving families a separate area to mourn—a crucial step in maintaining dignity and respect during an emotionally difficult time.
Expert Insight: Professor David Thomson Weighs In
Professor David Thomson, a transplant specialist and critical care surgeon at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Groote Schuur Hospital, praised the initiative, calling it a “really great” step forward.
“It’s amazing to see students run with this idea,” said Thomson. “We struggle with consent processes in South Africa, and often, the lack of space is used as a reason not to engage families about donation. This project could help drive more donations at Tygerberg.”
Thomson highlighted that South Africa’s organ donation rates remain low, with only one donor per million people—far below countries like Spain (47 donors per million) and the UK (24 per million). He emphasized the need for better end-of-life counseling and a cultural shift toward supporting organ donation nationwide.
The Wider Impact: Saving Lives Across South Africa
The greatest demand is for kidney transplants, as dialysis can only sustain patients for so long. However, pediatric cases—particularly for heart and lung transplants—are even more urgent due to the need for size-matched organs.
Thomson also stressed the importance of tissue donation, such as corneas, skin, and bone grafts. “A single cornea transplant can restore sight to a blind person, and skin donations are life-saving for burn victims—especially children,” he explained.
A National Call to Action
While the Save7 LifePod marks a significant advancement, Thomson noted that broader systemic changes are needed. South Africa lacks a comprehensive donor registry, and improving consent rates requires better collaboration between medical teams and families.
The National Department of Health recently held a donor awareness campaign, signaling government support for increasing donation rates. However, public education and healthcare worker training remain key to sustaining progress.
