Non communicable diseases prevention campaign in rural Kathmandu

About fifty people from Kavresthali are reached for Diabetes, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and healthy lifestyle campaign conducted by VIN. The campaign was designed to aware people about diabetes and COPD. They are motivated to adopt healthy lifestyle. Volunteers measure their blood pressure, height and weight. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated from height and weight. People who are in risk were informed for healthy lifestyle.

Dutch medical volunteers Anna and Jennifer and local volunteers Sabina and Jyoti in supervision of Dr Laxmi carried out the campaign in four places of Kavresthali. They have a plan to do the campaign at all places of Kavresthali throughput August.

From the first four days campaign they found that a lot of older men have mild hypertension. Sometimes they already know this about themselves, but haven’t seen a doctor for this yet. Sabina and Jyoti then tell them about the clinic on Tuesdays to convince them. The BMI for men differs a lot, it was dependent on the family. However there is no significant correlation between high BMI and high blood pressure.

For women they found a higher BMI, although this often is slightly over 25 kg/m2. Mostly women are not shocked by their higher BMI, they were making fun of each other. Only two women out of 28 appeared to have hypertension

Volunteers are found happy with the project however they have doubt that local people will follow them “We really enjoy telling the people and it encourages us to see the people interested. The local volunteers help us with clarifying our story to the community and we have the feeling we do raise awareness. However, we doubt if people will really change their habits to prevent diseases.”

Local people are happy to be in the campaign “It is good for me to learn the diseases. I am suffering from COPD. I hope my next generation will learn it and prevent disease.” Said by Dil kumari Lamichane.
