Dead by Daylight (DBD) is a unique multiplayer horror game that pits four Survivors against one deadly Killer in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Since its release in 2016, the game has grown into a cult favorite, thanks to its tense gameplay, iconic horror crossovers, and ever-evolving meta. But does it still hold up in 2025? Let’s dive in.

Developer: Behaviour Interactive
Publisher: Behaviour Interactive
Release Date: June 14, 2016
Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Mobile
Genre: Asymmetrical Survival Horror

Gameplay: A Tense Battle of Wits

The core of Dead by Daylight is simple yet addictive:

  • Survivors must repair generators to power exit gates and escape before the Killer hunts them down.

  • Killers must sacrifice Survivors to the Entity (the game’s malevolent force) by hooking them and preventing their escape.

Each role offers a vastly different experience:

  • Survivors rely on stealth, teamwork, and quick reflexes to outmaneuver the Killer.

  • Killers use unique abilities (like teleportation, traps, or stealth) to track and eliminate their prey.

The asymmetrical nature of the game creates an adrenaline-fueled experience where every match feels unpredictable.

Strengths:

  • High replayability – Procedurally generated maps and randomized perks keep matches fresh.

  • Diverse roster – Over 30 Killers and Survivors, including licensed characters like Michael MyersFreddy Krueger, and Nemesis from Resident Evil.

  • Constant updates – Behaviour Interactive frequently adds new content, balancing changes, and seasonal events.

Weaknesses:

  • Steep learning curve – New players may struggle against experienced opponents.

  • Toxic community – Like many competitive games, DBD has its share of toxic players.

  • Balance issues – Some Killers and perks can feel overpowered or underpowered depending on the meta.

Graphics & Atmosphere

Dead by Daylight excels in creating a chilling atmosphere. Maps range from eerie forests to abandoned asylums, all dripping with horror aesthetics. The sound design is equally impressive—creaking floors, distant growls, and the Killer’s terror radius music keep players on edge.

However, the graphics are somewhat dated compared to newer titles, and some animations can feel clunky. Still, the art direction compensates with its dark, oppressive tone.

Progression & Customization

DBD features a deep progression system:

  • Bloodweb – Players spend Bloodpoints to unlock perks, items, and cosmetics.

  • Shrine of Secrets – Allows players to buy rare perks with in-game currency.

  • Battle Pass (Rift) – Offers cosmetic rewards through seasonal challenges.

While the grind can be tedious, unlocking powerful perks and stylish outfits keeps players engaged.

Final Verdict: Is Dead by Daylight Worth Playing in 2025?

Dead by Daylight remains one of the best asymmetrical horror games available. Its intense gameplay, frequent updates, and iconic horror crossovers make it a must-play for fans of the genre. However, newcomers should be prepared for a challenging learning curve and occasional balance frustrations.

If you love heart-pounding chases, strategic gameplay, and horror fan service, Dead by Daylight is still very much alive and kicking.

Pros:

  • Asymmetrical horror game

  • Extremely fun game with friends
  • Rewarding grind with cosmetics and progression

  • Yearly events
  • Many horror movie crossovers

  • Collaborations with other games

Cons:

  • Solo queue (playing survivor alone) can be painful at times due to lack of communication

  • Balanced matchmaking is sometimes questionable

  • MMR has a burn out effect for killer and survivors at high levels

  • At the time of writing slugging is a problem especially when 2 survivors are left. Slugging to finish off all 4 survivors is annoying to experience.

Game score: 9.5/10
Horror score: 7/10
