New Disruptor Pekkish tackles Food Ordering and Delivery

Pekkish SA, a local food market app has positioned themselves as a firm contender food order and delivery within Cape Town. Since its launch in September 2020, vendor sign-ups have increased by 83%, bringing the total vendors online to a whopping 40 vendors in less than two months.

The user-friendly app provides the perfect platform for Capetonians to start or grow their home-based businesses by providing a safe space for them to manage and track orders, arrange delivery and process payments. Bringing the most delicious treats and meals Cape Town has to offer from one home to another in a couple of swipes.

What started as an idea between a group of friends who wanted to address the growing unemployment rate in South Africa, the app has now afforded opportunities to many kitchens that didn’t have access to online platforms and suffered during the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s always been about the community to us. We don’t see ourselves as a competitor to established food delivery providers. Our focus is on supporting and growing local small to medium businesses only. This strategy and ethos have further enabled shared opportunities for vendors, such as shared driver networks. Pekkish SA businesses within the same radius can share a pool of drivers, keeping costs low and customers well-fed,” says Narique Sangster, spokesperson at Pekkish SA.

With many areas across the Cape Flats excluded from the delivery radius of most food delivery services, communities can enjoy the delicious and affordable meals made by fellow Capetonians.

And nothing is added to the menu prices, so customers are getting what they pay for and not spending a cent more. The tiered costing structure provides the vendor with a monthly fee from as little as R149 to a maximum of R799 based on the number of orders fulfilled.

“The monthly cost structure is the only cost to the vendor upon sign up, there are no mark-up to menus and no percentage of turnover taken from vendors. Allowing these entrepreneurs to focus on the food and maximising profits, putting them in control,” added Sangster.

The brand plans to launch in Johannesburg in the coming months.
