A limited-time winter menu celebrating bold Asian flavours, thoughtful cooking, and the joy of gathering.

Chef Mphela speaks on his residency  here

Wednesday 15 July|Johannesburg, South Africa |MATH Restaurant is once again opening its kitchen to one of Johannesburg’s most exciting emerging culinary voices. From 15–19 July, Chef Eric Mphela returns to MATH for an exclusive five-day culinary collaboration, presenting a specially curated winter menu inspired by his signature bold Asian flavours. The menu will be available for dinner service from Wednesday to Friday, before expanding to both lunch and dinner throughout the weekend.

Following the success of his previous collaboration during the MATH Wine Club, Chef Eric returns with an entirely new menu that celebrates bold, comforting flavours designed for sharing. Rooted in modern Asian influences, the limited-edition menu perfectly reflects MATH’s belief that some of life’s best moments happen around the table.

Guests can begin with dishes such as heirloom tomatoes with amasi and rooibos, crispy jalapeño calamari with green goddess dressing and pickled vegetables, or beef tartare served on a tostada with crispy garlic. For mains, highlights include a fragrant Massaman chicken curry, prime rib on the bone with roasted bone marrow and seven-spice potatoes, gochujang-glazed short rib with broccolini and salsa verde, and Chef Eric’s indulgent take on a chilli cheeseburger with double smashed patties, pickled jalapeños and house burger sauce.

While his name may still be unfamiliar to some, Eric Mphela is quietly becoming one of Johannesburg’s most compelling culinary storytellers. More than a chef, he creates experiences that bring people together, using food as a catalyst for conversation, curiosity and community. His sought-after kitchen takeovers have developed a loyal following, with diners drawn to his instinctive ability to balance refined technique with warm, generous hospitality.

This menu is a reflection of how I love to cook, bold flavours, comforting dishes and food that invites people to slow down and share a table. Returning to MATH feels incredibly special because we’ve built something together that goes beyond a meal. It’s about creating moments that people remember long after the last plate leaves the table.”– Chef Eric Mphela

The collaboration continues MATH Restaurant’s commitment to championing emerging creative talent while offering guests experiences that extend beyond traditional dining. By opening its kitchen to visiting chefs, MATH continues to position itself as a space where creativity, culture and exceptional hospitality intersect.

“Opening our restaurant to Chef Eric once again was an easy decision. Our previous collaboration during the MATH Wine Club was incredibly well received by our guests, and it reminded us how powerful these creative partnerships can be. Eric brings a warmth and energy to the kitchen that perfectly aligns with everything MATH stands for, and we’re excited to welcome guests back for another unforgettable experience.” – Puleng Mathabatha, Founder of MATH Restaurant

Available for five days only, the Chef Eric Mphela Winter Pop-Up Menu will be served from 15–19 July for both lunch and dinner service at MATH Restaurant.
