As part of the 2023 Absa Cape Epic Route launch Gala Dinner, proudly African bank, Absa announced its commitment to growing the #SheUntamed initiative, a programme designed to improve women’s access to the sport of mountain biking (MTB), through increased participation of women in the Team Absa line-up.

Just over two years ago, Absa launched #SheUntamed, with a bold goal in mind, to shift the
perspective of cycling by entrenching its purpose of bringing possibilities to life and gearing
women up to break down barriers.

In the lead-up to the 2023 event, Absa is shifting gears and committing to not only have 20% of the Team Absa line-up be all-women riders that will participate in the race that measures all, but Session 1 of the Epic Trippers, a hugely popular, active spectator programme that allows a select group of participants to experience the Absa Cape Epic, enjoying world class hospitality whilst riding their bikes and cheering on the worlds’ best mountain bikers and fellow avid amateurs, will for the second year be dedicated to an all-women field.

“The 2023 Absa Cape Epic will see Absa continuing to make a difference as we create more
opportunities for women to participate in top events in cycling through our SheUntamed
programme,” said Geoff Lee, Absa Group Chief Executive, Product Solutions Cluster.
“This is one of several initiatives created to drive transformation, diversity and inclusion and
in turn, is part of Absa’s ambition to be an active force for good in everything that we do.”
The #SheUntamed programme welcomes a community of women who are ready to test their limits and participate in a series of MTB events, supported by coaches Erica Green, Sarah Hill, Phillimon Sebona and Hannele Steyn to prove that they have what it takes to take on and complete in the globe’s most challenging, grueling and testing 8-day MTB stage race,
the Absa Cape Epic, a feat like no other.

Team Absa’s current line-up includes the Last Lioness Hannele Steyn; the only female of
three, to have completed every edition of the race, and the #SheUntamed duo, Remofilwe
Moeketsi and Beauty Ngobese, who made history in 2021 as the first all-black-women team
to conquer the race that measures all, for Team Absa.
