Grieving the recent loss of her mother, med student Nandipha is haunted by a mysterious woman she has never met who appears in her dreams and reality as she grapples with an unknown illness that cannot be cured with Western medicines. Finally accepting the help offered to her in her dreams, Nandipha receives physical healing by accepting her spiritual gifts.
Mary can be seen as the spiritual mouthpiece as she advocates for Nandipha to dig further into her ailments and dreams. Siyanda is Nandipha’s support structure and guide as she grieves the loss of her mother. Siyanda is Nandipha’s tether to reality, particularly as she begins to see premonitions of Ubizo calling her and guiding her towards accepting her spiritual gifts.
The film’s artistic vision is an exploration of grief and pain through the poetic nature of communion between the spiritual and the physical. The film brought the spiritual elements alive through the use of music, particularly the cello, as it emphasises Nandipha’s inner turmoil. Mary represents Nandipha’s inner voice as she grapples with her sickness in secrecy.
