The vibrant Fête de la Musique is set to return to Victoria Yards on 21 June for its 14th edition, coinciding with two major celebrations: the 50th anniversary of UNESCO’s International Music Day and the 30th anniversary of the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS).

This year’s festival promises an electrifying lineup, featuring over 20 acts carefully selected from more than 300 applications by a panel of national and international judges. Organiser Brad Holmes shared insights into the event’s growth and significance, highlighting its role in nurturing young talent and fostering community engagement.

A Platform for Emerging Artists

Holmes emphasised the festival’s commitment to developing South Africa’s music industry, with programs like the Live Music Lab offering mentorship and hands-on experience for aspiring professionals.

“This year, students from the 2024 intake are producing the festival under mentorship, while next year’s group will shadow them,” Holmes explained. “It’s about creating opportunities for underprivileged youth passionate about music.”

Celebrating Legacy and Evolution

The event also marks a full-circle moment for artists like Sonal Music, Bangazu, and Mabunda, who performed a decade ago and now return as established acts.

“Fête de la Musique has been part of their career growth,” said Holmes. “It’s about more than just performances—it’s about building a sustainable industry.”

Sustainability and Community Impact

In line with its eco-conscious vision, the festival is going green this year, partnering with Kick (Keep It Clean) to maintain cleanliness in Bertrams and Bez Valley. Additionally, Victoria Yards—a hub for arts and culture—provides a dynamic backdrop for the festivities, attracting a diverse crowd of all ages.
