Johannesburg, get ready for the musical tribute spectacular of the year! International singing superstar and Showtime Australia artist, Belinda Davids, is returning home to South Africa to perform a limited number of special orchestral concerts in the City of Gold this June – for her sole concert offering in her home country for 2020.

After enjoying a successful debut run of orchestral concerts in Cape Town last November, Davids and the production team of The Greatest Love of All is set to captivate Johannesburg fans at The Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre, from 5- 28 June 2020.

These special and limited orchestral concerts featuring South African-born Davids, are a first for Johannesburg, having already performed to Cape Town audiences in November last year as well as to sold-out arenas in the UK and Russia in 2019.

The Greatest Love of All sees Whitney Houston’s musical legacy being brought to the stage in this critically acclaimed global tribute show. This must-see musical concert tribute to one of music’s most loved-icons, sees the vocally-mesmerizing Davids accompanied by a full South African orchestra, backing vocalists and choreographed dancers plus state-of-the-art sound, lighting, vision and theatrical effects, that will leave you singing along nostalgically and wanting more.

“I’m so excited to finally bring the orchestra performances to Johannesburg in June. We’ve had so much fun performing in the UK, Russia and Cape Town with an orchestra component and I know fans are going to really be impressed by this unique touch to the production,” says Davids.

Since 2012, Davids has captivated global audiences in UK, Europe, Middle East, Asia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and continues to gather glowing reviews worldwide for her jaw-dropping performances.

In July 2019, Davids scooped the prestigious International Special Recognition Award at the UK’s National Tribute Music Awards. The international superstar took home the accolade in acknowledgement of her “global contribution to tribute performing” and “ground-breaking influence on the music industry”.

This year has already seen Davids take the USA by storm with the show, as The Greatest Love of All is set to wrap up a three-month tour later this month, before moving onto Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Dubai soon.

“2020 has already kicked off on a high note on our global tour, so that’s why our production team and the cast are all excited to return home to South Africa. We been having so much fun in the USA so far, but nothing beats performing for an audience at home,” admits Davids.

The two-hour concert experience covers a most of Houston’s greatest hits including: ‘I Will Always Love You’, ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, ‘How Will I Know’, ‘One Moment in Time’, ‘I Have Nothing’, ‘Run to You’, ‘Didn’t We Almost Have It All’, ‘Greatest Love of All’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, ‘Queen of the Night’, ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop)’, ‘Million Dollar Bill’ and more.

Showtime Australia CEO and The Greatest Love of All producer, Johnny Van Grinsven, describes the show as a “special once-in-a-lifetime concert event”.

“Whether you’re a fan of Belinda’s or you just love the great soulful sounds from the ‘80s, this show has all the right ingredients to cater to all ages. Belinda is an iconic artist who is cultivating her own musical legacy across the global with the richness in her tone, spellbinding voice and her unique ability to wrap a lyric in motion. She does the perfect job of bringing Whitney’s musical legacy to life on stage and any fan should regard this as a ‘must-see’ concert experience.”

MORE ABOUT BELINDA DAVIDS

South African songstress Belinda Davids was born in Port Elizabeth and began performing professionally at the age of 14. She has never had vocal training and is blessed with a four-octave vocal range, which allows her to sing any genre.

Belinda’s inspirations as a child were Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Donny Hathaway, Michael Jackson and the one artist she honours in every show is Whitney Houston.

For Davids, starring in The Greatest Love of All is the culmination of a life-long connection with the superstar to whom she pays homage.

In respect for Houston’s legacy, Showtime Australia dedicated over 12 months to creating the show, first to finding the perfect star, and then to perfecting the production.

It took over 15 000 auditions in 12 countries to find the right voice, and finally our very own South African Belinda Davids emerged as the front-runner in 2013.

Exposed mainly to R&B and gospel as a child, Davids was innately drawn to Houston’s musical style, and paid homage to her idol through her dress and hairstyle and by including Houston songs in almost all her live shows.

The ultimate realization of Davids’ affinity with Houston occurred during a show in Hong Kong. Following a recital of ‘I Will Always Love You’, the audience was so astounded by her performance that they demanded she sing acapella to prove she wasn’t lip-syncing to a Houston track.

After winning BBC TV’s Even Better Than The Real Thing musical contest in 2017, Davids performed at the Apollo Theatre in late 2017, which captivated US radio and TV personality Steve Harvey on stage with her amazing rendition of “I Will Always Love You”. That jaw-dropping performance has been viewed over 25 million times on Facebook to date – cementing Davids as a true global musical icon.
