The Grade 5s visited Kwazamokuhle School for the Disabled last week Friday. The day was filled by being educated by an occupational, speech-language and physiotherapist about disabilities and assistive devices. The children got to feel what it is like to use a wheelchair, crutches, walking frames, canes for the blind, cut with one hand whilst being partially blinded, tie your shoelaces with one hand, etc.
They also got to meet the Grade 5 learners who have both mental and physical disabilities of various kinds and to share poems and song items with them. The H.O.D. of the Senior Primary, who is disabled and confined to a wheelchair, gave them his testimony, and they could ask him many questions. They also got to visit some of the other classrooms and boarding facilities. The children came back grateful and had their own “cups filled” so they could pass on the generous donations from our school community of clothing, shoes and toys to the school.
