Renowned SA academic to explore hot topic of ethics in education
Professor Jonathan Jansen

Professor Jonathan Jansen, an eminent professor, prolific writer and well-known public speaker, is set to speak at the much-anticipated School Leadership Forum organised by globally lauded non-profit, Citizen Leader Lab. The forum, taking place on Thursday, 9 February 2023 at the Oude Molen Technical High School in Cape Town, is generously sponsored by loyalty rewards programme, MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet.

School Leadership Forums offer tangible knowledge and skills on education and leadership related matters to principals, school management teams, school governing bodies and teachers. The first instalment of the forum for 2023 will see the Distinguished Professor of Education at Stellenbosch University explore the topic of Ethics in Education.

Selwyn Page, Regional Manager for Citizen Leader Lab, said: “Many of our schools are becoming complex moral environments due to rapidly changing learner and community demographics, resource limitations, curriculum and policy challenges and greater awareness of global issues. In morally complex environments such as schooling, school leaders and educators at some point face difficulties associated with making ethical decisions and responding to critical situations and incidents. This forum featuring Professor Jansen aims to get school leaders thinking about these ethical challenges.

Professor Jansen, who is a long-standing supporter of Citizen Leader Lab and its flagship programme Partners for Possibility, is no doubt is an admirable embodiment of personal integrity and respect for the law, ethics, justice and equality. We encourage our school leaders and educators to join us for the invaluable nuggets of wisdom Professor Jansen has to offer.’’

Professor Jansen was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State (UFS) in 2009 and served in this role until mid-2017 when he took-up a Professorship at the University of Stellenbosch. Educated at the University of the Western Cape, UNISA and Cornell, he obtained a PhD at Stanford in 1991 and holds Honorary Doctor of Education degrees from the University of Edinburgh and Cleveland State University. Prior to taking-up the post of V-C of UFS, he served as Professor of Education at the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Pretoria.

He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Science of South Africa, the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World, die Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns and of the American Educational Research Association. In addition, Professor Jansen serves as patron of several local NPOs.
