Ithuba, the National Lottery Operator, in partnership with the Eric and Charmaine Mabuza Scholarship Foundation are on a mission to empower the youth to reach their dreams.
The Foundation has been helping young people pursue their dream tertiary studies since 1999 and asks for nothing in return except for the students to pay it forward. This can include giving back to someone less fortunate in their community, to financially contributing at home or by helping someone through school.
‘’Part of the vision 2030 mission is to improve access to occupations in high demand and priority skills aligned to supporting economic growth, employment creation and social development whilst also seeking to address systemic considerations – hence the National Skills Development Plan, which ITHUBA subscribes to. This cannot be achieved without education. First, the youth must acquire knowledge, and then their skills can be refined. Many of our scholarship beneficiaries become a part of the ITHUBA graduate programme, to fulfill this very purpose,” says Charmaine Mabuza, Ithuba Group CEO.
This Friday Ithuba, the National Lottery Operator will be awarding 26 students with full-time university scholarships, bringing the total intake to 41 students for 2021. Seventeen-year-old Nazi Kalase, from the Eastern Cape in Centane has been selected as one of the top students that will be awarded with the full-time university scholarship. She is the firstborn in a family of three siblings and lives with her mother. She matriculated from the Zingisa Comprehensive High School.
Nazi first heard about the scholarship offered by ITHUBA, through her mother, who then encouraged her to apply. Her educational goal is to study Accounting Sciences at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and her personal goal is to one day buy her mother a car.
“I was very overwhelmed when I received the news on being selected as a recipient, after a tough interview and application process. Being raised by a single mother meant that she had to go the extra mile to ensure that we received everything we needed. It was always my late grandma’s dream for me to go to university and achieve my goal of becoming the first Charted Accountant in my family and ITHUBA has now afforded me that opportunity,” said Nazi Kalase.
Her life motto is, “never give up, no matter the circumstances.
